It’s been snowing for 4 days so far and we have now had 6″ fall in our garden. Every morning I open the curtains to another magical display of Nature’s talents and it takes my breath away. This was taken the first morning, the sky was very grey, a sign of things to come.
I am fortunate, I don’t have to struggle into work on icy roads or wait around for cancelled commuter trains, I have enough food in for a nuclear winter and I have someone who can brave the cold air and slippery paths to bring in the wood for the stove. I can sit back with a cup of warm golden milk* or chocolate and just marvel at the landscape framed by my windows.

I know many people struggle in this weather, especially when the snow melts and then freezes. My mum can’t leave the house, a fall would be disastrous given her age and distance from family, and I can’t go out the door and risk a fall given my back issues. But for now, I am enjoying the view.

The sun is shining today, making the snow sparkle like diamonds, the moon is still up too and the snow was still pristine when I took the photos (until my husband went in search of kindling, he’s not have an easy time lighting the fire).
Here are some photos taken over the last weekend mostly from indoors I’m afraid, too treacherous to venture out. We hardly ever have snow here so to have so much for so long is quite a bonus, my apologies if you have too much of it or you’re enjoying your summer! My friend in Perth showed her almost 3 year old daughter our snow pics and she is now watching out of her window waiting for the snow to arrive for Christmas – it’s 30C!
Yesterday at dusk:

This morning:

The bonus of a snow weekend meant we bought a (tiny but cute) tree, decorated it and put up the lights. It all feels cosy and Christmasy now. We just need a few children to build a snowman and marvel at the lights. But we have to wait a couple of weeks for that. I finished all the cards for posting and the Christmas rocks had been delivered the day before the snow came.
Christmas, we’re all ready!
*Golden milk: gently warm some nut milk, tiger nut milk or other plant milk with some fresh ginger and turmeric, stirring all the time until hot enough to drink. Strain and add a teaspoon of maple syrup if liked.

Lovely! Our village transforms into picture postcard scenes too in the snow. Awful to drive on though.

Yes, I feel sorry for those who have to brave the roads first thing in the morning or in the evening especially. My young recently widowed neighbour was out at 7.45am scraping the snow and ice off her car with an almost 2 year old and his older brother freezing inside the car while she did it. It took forever. I felt so sorry for her.

I love snow unreservedly. For me it is the magic of winter. I love frost too. And ice. This is probably why I live where I live. Your pictures are fabulous and given that Grenoble has now given way to unrelenting rain (it’s a clockwork cycle here …. snow, freeze, warm, rain, snow, freeze, warm, rain) I loved your beautiful pictures even more. I am going to get a little tree this week and decorate it. I will be on my own this year and I don’t want to just let the season pass by. It won’t be ostentatious just a simple little tree and I will love it.

A little tree is all you need, and maybe a few fairy lights or candles. We didn’t have a tree last year and my youngest grand-daughter was not impressed!

The silly thing is that I have a lovely tiny tree in store in Marcolès (see latest post though not specific about tree)…. but I think I will get a real one and perhaps negotiate to leave it in a pot here when I go …. the smell, surely the smell will entice – I feel my neighbours are proper sapin de Noel folks!

There’s nothing like a real tree – we had to do without one for 19 years while we had our cat, she used to think we’d installed indoor plumbing for her and would leave her own present under the tree. My son is having the same problem with his two 😄🎄🐈

Oh those pesky cats! They don’t think the same as us (why should they?) I bought a tiny tree today in the Christmas market. I felt rather like Bob Cratchit in ‘A Christmas Carol’ taking the tiniest of them all ….

Haha, ours is the smallest available too. They are so expensive and so heavy to transport in and out of the house.

The snow is pretty but I don´t like having to get around in it. Although I spent a good part of my life dealing with it. I´m now happy to be in Spain where there is no snow.

We don’t see it much here, it’s years since we had more than a one-day flurry – none at all last year – so we like it at the moment, but if it goes on too long and starts interfering with Christmas travel arrangements, then not so much!

It is lovely to look at if you don’t need to travel. Thankfully, no snow here except on hilltops and high ground. A little fall would be lovely on Christmas Day…
