Guess the Secret Ingredient in this Gorgeous-Looking Smoothie!

This smoothie was another quirky experiment that turned out so much better than I expected! (see Khaki Kiwi Coconut Smoothie!Have You Tried Savoury Porridge Yet?Pink Oats, Anyone?Cauliflower Oats (Don’t Laugh, It’s a Thing!) and Zoats: Mark 2 (I like this one better!)).

img_3054Following my 16 days of juicing, I had some red cabbage left over that needed using up, so I decided to try it in a smoothie. I thought it might be bitter and make the smoothie a horrible dark colour like sump oil or something, but look at it, it’s gorgeous! And it tastes as lovely as it looks.

It might be a step too far for some of you, but you might be pleasantly surprised.

Red cabbage is full of nutrients including Vitamin C and K, and is well-known for its gut healing and antiflammatory, cancer prevention qualities. 

The smoothie also contains protein, healthy fats, probiotics, B Vitamins and fibre.

All measurements are very approximate, adjust to suit your own taste buds. This is definitely a ‘thinny’. Makes enough for 2 servings.

Vegan, Gluten-free, Organic where possible, cabbage and blueberries rinsed.


1 Small to medium Banana

A handful of Blueberries

A small handful of shredded Red Cabbage

2 Heaped Tbsps Raw Hemp Seeds*

2 Tbsps Live Coconut Yogurt (or any other live yogurt)

About 250-300mls Coconut Water

Add a pitted Medjool Date if you’re worried! I had it without.

Blend in a high speed blender.

Blackberry, Açaí & Chia Smoothie

imageIt was just warm enough to have my breakfast smoothie outdoors this morning, but there is a definite autumnal feel in the air first thing. Nevertheless, reluctant to give in just yet, I donned my shorts and sunnies and made the most of it.

This smoothie had some gorgeous large organic blackberries in it. Blackberries are SO good for you.

Nutritionally dense, blackberries are rich in antioxidants, including Vitamin C, minerals and fibre. They are everywhere at the moment, so why not go back to your roots and spend a couple of hours in the fresh air blackberrying – be sure to wash them well and inspect them for insects before eating. Of course, if you’re 3 years old like my grand-daughter, completely disregard this advice, eat them all before you get home and just beam your purple smile!

Açaí is a South-American super-fruit with a mild chocolatey/blackberry flavour which complements the blackberries well while adding lots of healthy nutrients to the smoothie. Açaí is extremely high in antioxidants and has been found to boost immune cell function.

Pumpkin seeds are a good source of Omega 3 essential fatty acids and a good plant-based source of zinc, good for prostate health, a strong immune system, cell growth, wound healing and the breakdown of carbohydrates.

Vegan and Gluten-Free if you use Gluten-Free Oats.


1 Small Banana

Handful Blackberries, washed

1 Tbsp Açaí Powder*

2 Heaped Tbsps Oats

Glass Unsweetened Chi Coconut Water (depending how thick or thin you like it)

1 Tbsp Chia Seeds*

1 Small Handful Pumpkin Seeds

Blend and sip at leisure!

Tarty Purple Plum Smoothie with Açaí & Chia


I am doing the free Juice Master 7 Day Guided Juice Challenge* this week, but here is a lovely tasty purple smoothie for the rest of you!

This is a refreshing, but quite tart, thin smoothie that is high in resveratrol, a substance present in purple fruits and veg which is believed to be anti-aging. The quinoa flakes provide protein and minerals as do the chia seeds.

Our plums weren’t ripe but I quite like tarty fruit, however if you prefer a sweeter flavour try adding a medjool date or a little dark maple syrup.

Açaí is a South American fruit that has recently joined the list of superfoods in Western diets. It has a mixed blackberry/cacao flavour. It is full of anti-oxidants.

If your grapes are not organic, be sure to give them a thorough rinse, they are one of the most chemical-sprayed fruits available.

It is best if you pre-soak the Chia Seeds, Quinoa Flakes and Açaí Powder in the Coconut Water in the blender for 15-20 minutes


2 Plums, chopped

Handful of seedless Purple Grapes

1 Rounded Tbsp Chia Seeds*

1 Small Glass unsweetened Coconut Water

1 Tbsp Quinoa Flakes

1 Rounded Tbsp Plain CoYo Coconut Yogurt

1 Tbsp Açaí Powder *

Blend and add ice for a refreshing summer energy boost.
